Booking your photo-shoot is only the first step on your journey to having great photos created. I am regularly asked by clients for advice on what they should wear to for a family Portrait Photo-shoot.
Below are some suggestions to ensure you get the most from photos.
1. Plan ahead
Once you book your photo session, start thinking of your clothes right away! Plan your colours, textures and layers, and exactly what you will be wearing on the day. Don’t wait until the day of, or day before, your photo-shoot to make a decision on clothing or you may run into an issue of clothes not fitting or being left in the laundry basket; plan ahead.
2. Co-ordinating colours, but not matching colours
Select one or two main colours and choose clothes that will fit in this colour scheme. Begin with your main colour and accessorise around it.
3. Textures and Layers are your friend
Add textures like jackets, scarves or belts to add a little more to the image. Don’t shy away from different textures.
4. Add accessories
Accessories add to your outfit and can be fun to use in photos. For example, have the man wear a tie for the woman to hold, necklaces for the kids to play with, hats to hide behind, and bags to peer into.
5. Limit patterns
Too many patterned items will detract attention from your finished image and may make it appear “too busy”. A simple pattern worn by one or two of your models is fine; however try to avoid having everyone in the photo wearing a pattern.
6. Avoid Characters
While all children have a favourite cartoon or movie character, try to avoid clothing with characters on them. Just like patterns, characters on clothing can be distracting and what’s popular now, may not be in 10 years’ time…think timeless.
7. Avoid all white or all black clothing
If you are wearing a plain white shirt then it is very easy to ‘blow out’ parts of your shirt causing it to lose its detail. The same can be said with all black, it’s easy to have ‘clipping’ on black clothing resulting in the detail being lost.
8. Consider your background
This section is closely related to the above. If you are taking photos in front of a backdrop, consider what you are wearing. It’s never a great idea to wear all black in front of a black backdrop, or all-white in front of a white backdrop; this can cause what I call the ‘floating head’ scenario.
9. Look at your home décor
Since you will be hanging your photos in your home you want to make sure the colours of your clothes go with the colour scheme of your home, or the main area of your home where the photos will be displayed.
10. Think Timeless
Fashions and styles come and go, but your photos will be displayed in your home for many years to come; you want them to be timeless, so it’s best to aim for more of a classic look, than one that instantly dates you or those in the photo.
11. Be Comfortable
This aspect of preparing for a photo-shoot cannot be understated! We have all seen, kids especially, wearing hats, boots, tutus, jackets, etc. They may look adorable, but if those kids aren't comfortable, it could make for a miserable photo shoot. If your photo-shoot is taking place outdoors, ensure you dress appropriately for the season and weather conditions on the day.
