Even photographers hire photographers. “Why?” you ask. “If you own a good camera, you don’t need a professional photographer, right?” ...this is not the case.
And here are the top 10 reasons why you should hire a professional photographer:
10. You will be in the images
In most families and groups of friends, there is always a 'designated photographer’, someone who has a camera and a little experience of taking all the group’s photos. This results in there rarely ever being any photos the ‘designated photographer’ in the albums. Or, the photos of the ‘designated photographer’ aren't as flattering, as they have been taken by another member of the group that hasn't practised much. By hiring a professional photographer, everyone gets to be in the photos.
9. Your photography session will be planned, thought out and styled
Unlike family snapshots, when you book in your portrait session (Location or Studio) your photographer will guide you on how to style the session. This will involve choosing the right location to suit your style and family and will also cover what to wear and how to prepare. This single point can make a huge difference in how professional your images will look.
8. Quality of the equipment
Most of my clients own a camera! The fact that they hire me shows that they value photography; hence most of them have their own camera as well. Although their cameras may be expensive, the cameras and lenses that your photographer owns cannot compare in quality to ordinary consumer cameras. Your photographer will have all the equipment required to produce beautiful images that most ordinary households won’t have.
Following on from this, your photographer will know how to use their equipment. Most of my clients that talk about their cameras also admit to me that they turn their camera to auto and let their camera do the work for them. Modern cameras can take great images on auto, but things can go very wrong too. This can result in underexposed images, blurry images or the on board flash popping up to light your subject, resulting in flat over-exposed images.
Your photographer will know how to use their equipment and will have manual control over their camera. They will be choosing their ISO, shutter speed and f-stop to ensure the image is well exposed. They know their equipment inside and out.
7. Image Editing Software
All Photographers use some form of post-processing software to carefully re-touch your images. We use products like Photoshop and Lightroom to ensure that your images are properly exposed, the colours are perfect and the images are polished to a professional level.
6. Attention to detail
Your photographer will pay attention to the detail. With new-born photography for instance, babies are posed right down to the position of their hands. Blankets are smoothed out, fabrics are ironed, and background clutter is removed. Every part of the image and your session is carefully planned to ensure that you get the best images possible.
5. Fresh eyes
Your photographer brings fresh eyes to your family and friends, and will look at them in a unique way. They will offer suggestions and solutions that you haven’t seen or thought of and this will result in images that you may not have thought to capture.
4. Investing in your home
One of the goals of most photography sessions is to produce images that will be enlarged and framed for display in your home. This is an investment in your home and can enhance a room. After spending a lot of time and hard earned money furnishing your home, finishing it off with professional images of your family only makes sense.
3. Experience and Training
It takes many years and lots of hard work to hone photography skills. Your photographer will have spent a lot of time and money educating themselves on how to use compose your images and light them well to create a lovely gallery of images for you to choose from.
Your photographer has shot a variety of events and portraits and has been exposed to many subjects and conditions. There’s no short-cut to experience, and you take a tremendous gamble with a first-timer or an inexperienced photographer not knowing what to do at various points during your event or shoot.
Those in the professional photography world have a lot of experience to draw from; they know intuitively to take extra shots of crucial moments in case anyone blinks or has an awkward expression. They know the ins and outs of posing and can make subjects look natural in any setting. They anticipate angles and approaches for each scene. They have experience in guiding groups of every size for optimal results, interacting fluidly with their subjects to achieve the desired results.
2. Professionally Invested
A professional photographer is working for you, and they are invested in your satisfaction. You are their client, not their relative or friend, and they will retain a level of professionalism your aunt or brother-in-law may not. They also have the fortitude and commitment to work for long periods without breaks and see the job through so that the best results possible are achieved.
1. The Number 1 Reason…
I believe that the number one reason to hire a professional photographer is that once the day is over, it is now a precious memory and you will want the best images possible of those memories.
Please make sure you capture the best images possible, so you will always look at those images and smile warmly. These photos will take you back to that time or that day, to a place where you can almost smell the flowers, and touch the friends and family captured in your images.
